Many of us have great intentions to send cards, but can’t seem to get onto paper what we’d like to say…
It’s as if we have personal note writer’s block. We treat writing a card as if it must be the Gettysburg Address! It’s really not that big of a deal people, don’t make things harder than they are. :)
A good way to get into the habit is to start with Thank You cards. There are SO many reasons to thank someone, whether a friend, client/customer, business partner, colleague, mentor, etc…
Here are some tips and tricks that I found useful when I was getting into the Thank you Card Writing habit.
1. Focus on what the person gave. Was it assistance, an experience, emotional support that made a difference, or a tangible gift? At the very least, you can describe the item or situation—and, when possible, sound enthusiastic!
2. Ask yourself what made it important to you. How do you feel about the item or kindness?
3. Reflect back to the person. You can also talk about how the gift or event reflects a specific personal quality of the giver, such as creativity or a sense of style.
4. Tell them what they want to hear. Give them some feedback on your meeting, or how what they did for you affected you. Don’t you like knowing someone gained something from you? Pass on the gift.
5. Lighten up. There’s always room for a smile in a thank-you note.

Most importantly just do it! Set a goal for the number of personal notes/cards you are going to send each day. Start with just ONE a day… it won’t kill you! After a week or so you’ll be amazed at just how many occasions happen to you on a daily basis that you would like to send a card for.
